Plover Protection

Piping_plover_chickPhoto From Audubon.org

Next time you go to the beach, please consider the shorebirds who live there. Traffic, loose dogs, and other disturbances greatly decrease the birds' ability to raise their family and many shorebirds numbers have declined dramatically because of it.

In Maine, there are now only 19 pairs of breeding Plovers left. This is scary! Fortunately, we human folk can do a lot to increase their chances of survival.  Simple and easy ways to help are keeping your dog on a leash at the beach, staying away from any birds who may be protecting a nest (dive bombing, acting injured, and urgent calling can all be warning signals), and spreading the word, can all make a big difference in the lives of these little gems.

Unplug Your Wireless, if you Bees

Honeybeefeedingladenwithpollen Image from Arkive.org

For your own sake and possibly every bee in the entire worlds, please unplug your wireless devices when they're not in use. (Why should we care about the Bees? Bees pollinate many of the fruits and vegetables we eat, and countless other plants we cannot live without).

Bees have been found to be very negatively affected by the radiation stemming from wireless devices. They are declining at an alarming rate, and it may be because they can find there way home when the wireless interrupts their method of navigation. One stunning fact is that Bees refuse to go back into their hives if cell phones are present.

Are Mobil Phones Wiping Out Our Bees?

So, next time you're not going to be using the wireless router for your internet for a while, please, for the bees sake, unplug it:) And, there's good news! It's easy. I did today, and it took me about 3 seconds.

Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge

Rachelcarsonrefuge While on location for a photo shoot near Portland, ME; we came upon Rachel Carson's Wildlife Refuge, a beautiful setting of marshes, high grass, and forest. Although it was only for the animals (mainly migratory birds), you could look over 14 or so acres of the 9,125 that comprise the sanctuary.

Rachel wrote the book Silent Spring where she "simply and convincingly explained the connections between humans and all creatures of the Earth. She alerted generations to use chemicals with utmost caution, warning that their improper use has dreadful effects on public health and the environment."

This was a great find. It's located between Kittery and Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The particular section shown here was in Wells Maine on route 9. (Open sunrise to sunset).
